Men’s Spring Racing Style Guide for Every Race Day

28th September 2026

Spring racing is not governed by one dress code. From Derby Day’s traditional monochrome to the colour and energy of Melbourne Cup Day, every occasion calls for its own expression of tailoring.

Each Wil Valor racing look begins with the same principles: a well-cut jacket, trousers worn at a traditional length, a fully buttoned shirt, a considered tie and pocket hank combination, and polished Oxford or brogue shoes.

CAULFIELD CUP: TAILORED TOBACCO

The warm tobacco feels particularly right for Caulfield Cup Day, and equally at home in the Brisbane spring.

COX PLATE: NAVY WITH ENERGY

Cox Plate Day calls for something sharper and more energetic.

The suggested cloth is Holland & Sherry Royal Mile 1976, reference 3123031, a navy and royal-blue pin-dot windowpane woven from Super 140’s wool. The subtle pattern gives the suit presence without overwhelming the wearer.
DERBY DAY: BLACK AND WHITE

Derby Day remains the most traditional occasion of the Spring Carnival.

For this look, we suggest Dormeuil Black Mohair, reference 191002, for an even sharp and more dramatic outfit. The black double-breasted suit is paired with Thomas Mason Silver shirting from the Albini Group, a brilliant-white 100/2 cotton poplin selected for its clarity and formality.

MELBOURNE CUP DAY: COLOUR WITH CONFIDENCE

Melbourne Cup Day is the occasion to embrace colour.

The recommended fabric is Holland & Sherry English Mohairs in French Blue Solid, reference 2824005. Woven in England from 80% Super 100’s wool and 20% mohair at a lightweight 230 grams, it combines vivid colour with the crispness needed for a strong double-breasted silhouette.

The suit is grounded with brilliant-white Thomas Mason Silver 100/2 poplin shirting from the Albini Group.

A golden-yellow silk tie, coordinated yellow-and-navy pocket hank and traditional yellow rose capture the spirit of Cup Day. Polished dark-brown wholecut Oxfords complete the outfit.

OAKS DAY: SOFT GREY AND BLUSH

Oaks Day calls for a softer and more elegant expression of racewear.

CHAMPIONS STAKES DAY: SAGE TAILORED

The final day of the Carnival allows tailoring to become slightly more relaxed.
